Abstract

Rubber components play a vital role in the underwater acoustic sensor scenario. The applications include acoustic window, sound absorber, baffles, hose, shock and vibration isolators, seals, 'O' rings etc. A vast majority of these products are polymer or rubber based composites. The range of versatile applications has been possible due to the large scope for tailor making of properties in rubber compounds. Rubbers that are used for acoustic sensors can be termed as passive acoustic materials, which have a definite influence in determining the performance of the device. Performance requirements are specific to each component. For example, for a deepwater seal retention of sealing efficiency demands compression stress relaxation to be minimum. On the other hand for anti vibration applications damping behavior is paramount
